June 11, 2025

In the busy life of Kathmandu, sometimes all we need is a peaceful retreat surrounded by nature. Away from the city's hustle and bustle, Jungle Mahal Wellness Resort offers a rejuvenating experience for those seeking peace, healing, and natural beauty. Situated just 15 kilometers from the heart of Kathmandu, this serene wellness resort under the lush Chandragiri Hills is a perfect weekend getaway for locals and travelers alike.

Recently, I had the pleasure of spending a day at Jungle Mahal Wellness Resort, and in this blog, I will share my firsthand experience, the highlights of the visit, what you can expect, and why I highly recommend this destination for anyone looking to unwind in nature.

Jungle Mahal Wellness Resort is located on the southern outskirts of Kathmandu Valley, directly below the enchanting Chandragiri Hills forest. The resort is nestled close to the dense forest area, offering cool fresh air, the sound of birds, and scenic views of both green hills and distant Himalayan mountains on clear days.

Being so close to nature, yet easily accessible from Kathmandu, makes Jungle Mahal an ideal destination for those who wish to escape the noise of the city without spending hours on the road.

How to Reach Jungle Mahal from Kathmandu

The total distance from Thamel, Kathmandu to Jungle Mahal Wellness Resort is approximately 15 kilometers. There are several ways to reach the resort depending on your preferences and budget:

By Local Bus: You can take a local bus heading towards Chandragiri Hills. After getting off at a nearby stop, it requires a short walk to reach the resort.

By Private Car or Taxi: I personally chose to travel by car. The road condition is very good overall, except for about 20-30 meters of unpaved road near the resort.

By Motorcycle/Scooter: Another affordable and adventurous way to reach is by two-wheeler, especially popular among young visitors.

Walking Option: For hiking lovers, you can combine a short hike with the visit as the surroundings are filled with trails and beautiful scenery.

The journey itself is enjoyable, with changing landscapes and cooler temperatures as you approach the forested area.

Though I only visited for a day, I had the chance to explore their accommodation options. The resort offers comfortable rooms built close to the forest area.

What makes the rooms special?

Forest View: Wake up to a view of dense greenery and fresh air.

Mountain View: On clear days, you can even catch glimpses of the majestic mountains.

Peaceful Environment: No traffic noise, just the sound of birds, wind, and nature.

Even if you choose not to stay overnight, spending a day there gives you enough opportunity to soak in the environment.

Nearby Attractions and Hiking Opportunities

For adventure seekers, Jungle Mahal also serves as a starting point for short hikes. The most popular one is the 2-hour hike to Chandragiri Hills cable car station.

Chandragiri Hills: Famous for panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley and the Himalayan range, the hilltop also hosts the historic Bhaleshwor Mahadev Temple.

Hiking Trail: The trail is fairly easy for moderate walkers and provides beautiful forest scenery along the way.

You can choose to hike up to the cable car station and either walk down or return via the cable car for a unique experience.

Food, Fruits, and Dining Experience

During my visit, I was pleasantly surprised to find seasonal fruits growing naturally around the area:

Kafal (Bayberry)

Arupokhara (Alucha)

Kiwi

The dining experience is wholesome, with meals prepared using fresh, organic, and local ingredients. Whether you are having vegetarian meals or specific Ayurvedic diet-friendly foods, the flavors are simple, nourishing, and satisfying.
