13 Days Everest Base Camp Trek
Overview
The Everest Base Camp Trek is a 13-day journey that offers an unforgettable adventure to the base of the world's highest peak, Mount Everest. Starting from Kathmandu, you will take a scenic flight to Lukla, the gateway to the trek. Depending on the flight schedule, the journey may also begin from Ramechhap Airport, which requires a 5-6 hour drive from Kathmandu. The trek covers beautiful landscapes, including Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, and Gorakshep, offering spectacular views of the Himalayas.
On the first day, after arriving in Kathmandu, you will have free time for preparation. The next morning, you will either fly from Kathmandu to Lukla or drive to Ramechhap for your flight. After reaching Lukla, a 3-4 hour trek will take you to Phakding. Over the following days, you will trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar, the bustling hub of the Khumbu region. An acclimatization day in Namche includes a trek to the Everest View Hotel, providing a stunning view of Mount Everest and surrounding peaks.
The trail then leads you to Tengboche, famous for its monastery and views of Ama Dablam. From there, you will continue to Dingboche, then to Lobuche, and finally reach Gorakshep, the last stop before the Everest Base Camp. On this day, you can visit either Kalapatthar for a sunrise view or head to Everest Base Camp and return to Gorakshep for the night.
If you're short on time or want to avoid the trek back to Lukla, helicopter services are available. The heli service from Gorakshep to Lukla costs about $700-$800 per person if you find a group. For a private helicopter, the cost ranges from $2,500-$3,000. Additionally, there is an option to take a helicopter from Lukla to Kathmandu, which costs $500-$700 on a sharing basis. This is a convenient way to conclude your trek and return to Kathmandu swiftly.
The return journey involves trekking back through Pheriche, Namche Bazaar, and Lukla, retracing the scenic path you took earlier. Weather can affect flights from Lukla to Kathmandu, so it is advisable to plan some extra days in Kathmandu after the trek. Upon your return, enjoy a farewell dinner with typical Nepali cuisine and a cultural program hosted by Destination Nepal Tours & Travels. This memorable evening serves as a perfect end to your Everest Base Camp Trek adventure.

The best time to trek the 13 Days Everest Base Camp Trek is during the pre-monsoon (spring) and post-monsoon (autumn) seasons. These periods offer the most favorable weather and excellent visibility of the stunning Himalayan scenery.
Spring (March to May)
Highlights: Spring is one of the most popular seasons for the Everest Base Camp Trek. During this time, the weather is relatively stable, and temperatures are moderate, making it comfortable for trekking. The trails come alive with blooming rhododendrons and other wildflowers, adding vibrant colors to the landscape. Spring is also the main climbing season for mountaineers attempting to summit Everest, so you may see many expeditions at the base camp.
Temperature: Daytime temperatures range from 15°C to 20°C (59°F to 68°F) at lower altitudes, while at higher elevations, it can be cold, with temperatures dropping below freezing at night.
Autumn (September to November)
Highlights: Autumn is the peak trekking season for the Everest Base Camp Trek. The weather is clear and dry, offering stunning views of the mountains and crisp air. This period provides the best visibility, with almost no clouds obstructing the panoramic sights. The trail is also bustling with trekkers from around the world, making it a great time to meet fellow adventurers.
Temperature: Daytime temperatures are similar to spring, around 15°C to 20°C (59°F to 68°F), but nighttime temperatures can be colder, especially as you ascend.
Other Seasons
Winter (December to February): Trekking to Everest Base Camp in winter is less common due to cold temperatures and heavy snowfall at higher altitudes. While the trails are quieter, you must be well-prepared for the extreme cold, especially at night. Daytime temperatures can be manageable, but it's not the best time if you are not comfortable with harsh winter conditions.
Monsoon (June to August): The monsoon season brings heavy rain, making the trails muddy and slippery. Flights to and from Lukla can be frequently delayed or canceled due to poor visibility. Additionally, views of the mountains are often obscured by clouds. Trekking during the monsoon is not recommended unless you are prepared for wet conditions and fewer crowds.

Today is an exciting day as we make our way to the viewpoint for Mount Everest. Firstly, we'll trek for about 3 hours, navigating boulders and rough paths until we reach the small settlement of Gorakshep. After a satisfying lunch, our journey continues towards Kalapatthar, which offers the most spectacular views of Everest. At an impressive altitude of 5,545 meters, Kalapatthar is the highest point you can trek to in Nepal without needing climbing permits. Its name means 'black rock' and refers more to a ridge than a distinct mountain peak. If the weather isn't clear, we might postpone our visit to Kalapatthar until the morning, as the sunrise view of Everest is just as breathtaking as the sunset. Alternatively, if we choose this option, we'll trek to Everest Base Camp today. Please note that trekking groups avoid entering the base camp area where climbing expeditions are set up, so as not to disrupt the climbers or pose any health risks to them. This helps to ensure we don't inadvertently pass on any illnesses during their significant journey, while still allowing us to admire the ongoing activities from a distance.

If we missed visiting Kalapatthar yesterday, we'll make the trip this morning and head back to Gorakshep for breakfast. Similarly, if we didn't get a chance to visit Everest Base Camp on day 9, we'll do that this morning too. Each excursion takes about 3 to 4 hours, including the return trip from Gorakshep. Following breakfast, we'll proceed towards Pheriche, which typically takes around 4 hours to reach. This small settlement is home to the Himalayan Rescue Association Clinic, which started as a clinic and has evolved into a hospital. It specializes in addressing altitude sickness and other altitude-related issues faced by trekkers and climbers, alongside providing healthcare services to the local community. Mostly run by volunteer medical professionals, this clinic is an intriguing highlight in the area worth exploring.
